Nutrition and Depression in Puerto Ricans: a comparative pilot study
The purpose of this comparative pilot study is to explore the relationship between dietary intake and depressive symptomatology in mainland Puerto Ricans between the ages of 50-70. This will be fulfilled through the following specific aims: 1) determining the adequacy of the food frequency questionnaire in this population 2) assessing levels of B_12 , folate, albumin and their relationship to depressive symptomatology and 3) comparing these specific aims to the cohort of Puerto Rican elders from the Boston Puerto Rican Longitudinal Study of Aging. Two hundred subjects between the ages of 50-70 will be recruited in Puerto Rico. Those subjects with a Mini-mental State Examination score below 10 will be excluded from the pilot study. Depressive symptomatology will be determined with the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale (CES-D). Furthermore, a culturally-sensitive food frequency questionnaire will evaluate dietary intake. Findings from this pilot study will provide comparative information between Puerto Ricans aged 50-70 in the mainland and those living in the US as well as elucidate on the relationship between dietary intake of B vitamins and depressive symptomatology.
